Documentation and monitoring in managing the timber objects in Krzysztof Kluk Museum of Agriculture in Ciechanowiec and the Ryfylke Museum

Supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants and co-financed by the Polish funds

The goal of the project implemented in partnership with the Ryfylke Museum (Norway) is to elaborate modern standards of managing timber objects in scope of documentation and monitoring their biotechnical and architectural-aesthetic condition, which will comply with "Principles for the preservation of historic timber structures" developed by the ICOMOS International Wood Committee. As a result of the implemented project, coherent tools will be created, allowing to act preemptively to prevent the degradation of buildings.

The need for the operation stems from the fact the Museum of Agriculture in Ciechanowiec has not a unified and modern system of documentation and monitoring of its architectural timber objects yet. Until the year 2011 as many as 23 buildings did not have so called "the white record of monument" (it contains information about technical condition, origin, as well as previous address of a monument, description, schemes and photographic documentation). In many cases there are gaps in information related to conservation treatments carried out in the past. Furthermore, as far as monitoring concerns, no detailed guidelines how it should be preformed for individual buildings have been developed. This kind of situation can pose a serious threat to adequate maintenance of the objects in the future because reaction to negative changes may come too late.

The profile of the Ryfylke Museum is similar to ours, because this cultural institution deals also with architectural timber heritage. The tasks of the Norwegian party will include i.a.: the organization of seminar in Sand on the Norwegian models for documentation and monitoring for representatives of the Museum of Agriculture Ciechanowiec, participation in the seminar on archiving standards as well as in the international conference summarizing the operation and its substantial contribution to the preparation of the scientific publication. It is worth noting that despite the fact our Norwegian partner has got good standards of documentation and monitoring, it is also open to the Polish experience and it is interested in implementation of the most interesting solutions.

The Ryfylke Museum is an independent cultural institution (foundation), which is financed with grants from the state, county and individual municipalities. Furthermore, it earns its own income from sales of tickets and souvenirs. Our partner is active in a large part of the Rogaland county, because it has 24 sites in eight municipalities. It takes care of 70 historic buildings, most of which were left in their original location. The historic resources of the Museum cover a wide verity, starting from small collections and simple structures to large yards with well furnished houses and adjacent gardens, cultivated land and cultural landscape. Our Partner is also in possession of a vessel, the Ryfylke sloop "Brödrene af Sand".

It is assumed that the project will last 20 months. Its launch is expected in May 2014 and the completion in December 2015.

The project will produce many durable effects, such as scientific publication summarizing the project; application software for documentation and monitoring, expert reports (4 pcs); template of object record with manual (1 pc).
